Borkum (Germany)
Borkum is the westernmost and, at just under 31 square kilometers, largest of the East Frisian Islands. Parts of the island and the adjacent mudflats belong to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The island is also the area of the city of Borkum, which as a state-recognized North Sea spa has numerous spa facilities. Like all other East Frisian islands, Borkum led a political and mostly economic shadow existence in the county of East Frisia, which belonged to Prussia from 1744, until the emergence of the bathing industry in the 19th century.
