About an hour’s drive from Cape town surrounded by mountains lies the picturesque town of Franschhoek, which has an unlikely distinction of being one of the world’s gastronomic capitals. This is the place where Dutch and French cultures, culinary art and world class wines, outdoor activities and history complement each other like nowhere else.
The French had a dream when they came to South Africa in the late 1600’s. Far from what was familiar to them, their language, culture and way of life, they dreamt about a future in a wild and foreign country. While we don’t speak French in the valley anymore, Franschhoek’s culture and industry are still very much French-inspired and there’s no denying that our French ancestors realised their dreams for this valley. It took a lot of hard work though.
The Franschhoek mountainland is made of Table mountain sandstone that was first raised as a mountain range more than 265 million years ago.The present landscape, mountains as well as valleys, dates from the break -up of Grondwana some 140 million years ago and is the direct result of continued erosion by the Berg River {and other rivers)in the region.
The village of Franschhoek (French Corner), tucked into the Cape Winelands of South Africa, is known as the country's food and wine capital. Galleries and antique shops fill the tree-lined streets, and vineyards established more than 300 years ago cascade over the hills just outside town. Local activities range from wine-tasting tours to trout fishing and hiking. The Huguenot Memorial Museum honors the town's early settlers, who fled religious persecution in France.
