Kotor (Montenegro)
Kotor is a beautiful coastal town in Montenegro known for its impressive fortification, charming architecture and alluring landscape.
The town is located in the valley of a mountainous region, situated in a secluded corner of The Bay of Kotor. From the early 14 hundreds till the late 17 hundreds Kotor was under Venetian occupation. Kotor, being a costal town with access to the Adriatic sea was a strategic location for the northern Venetian trade route leading to Constantinople (today's Istanbul). Under Venetian rule this small medieval town was renovated into a modern fortress most of which still stands today. The town is fortified with walls which lead up the St. John mountain and the small houses lining the winding cobblestone streets still bear resemblance of typical Venetian architecture.
The town itself is adorned by many churches. Although Kotor is predominantly Orthodox, out of the 8 churches built, only 2 are Orthodox and the rest are Catholic. This may be explained by the fact that the Romans were the first to settle in the area.
