Oxford (United Kingdom)
When you ask people about Oxford, the first common association is that it is home to the oldest University, and no wonder with its popularity all over the world. Another reason for its popularity as many of you probably already know, is the fact that several scenes from the Harry Potter movies were shot there.
This historic country town of Oxfordshire has buildings in every style of English architecture from the late Anglo-Saxon. The city's cultural and architectural diversity attracts many writers, filmmakers, and last but not least artists.
The name originates from the literal "ox" and "ford" meaning "where the oxen ford". In another reference to a type of shoe laced over the instep, the essential shoes for autumn in Oxford or to an accent supposedly characteristic of members of the university, by 1855. Another source says it comes from the old word ‘Oxanforda’ which is a ford in the river where cattle can cross safely. You can choose the one that is closest to you and makes the most sense.
The city has been a home to royalty and scholars for over 800 years and since the 9th century is officially an established town. Nowadays, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town surrounded by the arts, science, technology, and innovation.
Would you guess that Oxford has more published authors per square mile than anywhere else in the world? And another interesting fact, the first-ever cups of coffee in England were served in the local Grand Café.
