Province of Ogliastra (Italy)
Ogliastra, with the beauty of its coastline and mountainous hinterland, is only a recent discovery among Sardinia's tourist destinations. The area, enclosed between the sea and the mountains, offers an endless amount of unique scenery.
A paradise of remarkable beauty can be found along the eastern side of Sardinia, where nature brings out the best of itself. The origin of its name is believed to come from the olive trees (olivastro), which are found in abundance in the area, while others attribute its origin to the huge monolith overlooking the sea on the Baunei coast called Agugliastra (or Pedra Longa). The Ogliastra coastline is characterised by oases nestled between the sea and the rocks, forming one of the most magical marine environments in the Mediterranean. From the north, we encounter coves that can only be reached by sea or on foot. Among the most suggestive and famous beaches of this region are Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzé. To the south we find other interesting beaches such as Tancau, Girasole, Orrì, Cea, Marina di Barisardo and Cardedu, Coccorrocci or Sarralas Bay. But the greatest treasure is still the uncontaminated nature, which takes many forms and changes frequently. It stretches up into the hills to reach the Gennargent mountains, satisfying the eye with a very varied landscape of rare charm. A country that deserves a careful, inquisitive, penetrating look and not just a momentary glance around by the conventional tourist. From a historical and archaeological point of view, the whole area is worthy of attention thanks to the presence of many nurages, tombs of the Domus de Janas, sacred springs, tombs of giants and menhirs. On foot, by bicycle, on horseback, by car or off-road vehicle, you can follow the hiking trails and discover places that cannot be forgotten. If, on the other hand, you prefer travelling by sea, boats will take you to discover the beautiful coastline of the Ogliastra region. Only the combined play of images, perfumes and unique atmosphere can fully describe the magic and harmony of this area. Locals believe that you cannot claim to have visited Sardinia unless you have spent at least a few days in Ogliastra.
