ABOUT SARDINIA IN GENERAL
The island of Sardinia, Sardegna in Italian and Sardigna in Sardinian, is an autonomous region of the Italian Republic, which has a special status granted to Sardinia by the 1948 Constitution, guaranteeing it a wide range of political and administrative autonomy. The name Sardegna has its origins in the naming of its ancient inhabitants, the Sardinians, but in antiquity the Greeks gave the island the name Hyknusa or Icnussa, while the Latins called it Sandalion. This was because the shape of Sardinia reminded them of a human footprint. The flag of the Sardinians can be recognised by the four black heads of the Moors in white fields separated by a red cross.
LOCATION AND AREA
With an area of 24,090 km², it is the second largest island not only in Italy but also in the entire Mediterranean Sea, ranking behind Sicily, which is 1,620 km² larger. It is almost equidistant both from the Italian mainland, from which it is separated by a 180 km wide strip of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and from the African Tunisia, which lies 210 km beyond the Canale di Sardegna. However, Sardinia is closest to France, as Bonifacio, the southernmost town on the French island of Corsica, is only 15 km from Sardinia's shores. Sardinia has an elongated shape, 267 km long and 120 km wide.
