Soroca District (Moldova)
Located in the northeastern part of the Republic of Moldova, the Soroca District has direct borders to the northwest with Dondușeni district, to the west with Drochia district, to the south with Florești district, and to the southeast with the administrative-territorial unit on the left of the Dniester, and to the east with Ukraine. The area of the district is 104.3 thousand ha, of which 82.5 ha are agricultural lands. Within the district, there are 68 localities, 1 city, 34 communes, and 33 villages. According to the 2014 census, the population of the district is 100.1 thousand inhabitants, of which: the urban population is 37.5 thousand inhabitants, and the rural population is 62.6 thousand inhabitants. The main river that bathes the eastern border of the Soroca district is the Dniester with a length of 92.5 km on the territory.
Some historical documents attest to the establishment of the town on July 12, 1499, when Stephen the Great signed the peace treaty with Poland, "Coste, pârcălab de Soroca", as it is mentioned in the minutes of the princely council. This act also contains the first documentary attestation of Sorocia. Stephen the Great built a wood and earth fortress at Soroca, intended to resist Tatar and Polish invasions.
At the moment, the Soroca District has significant tourist potential. In the district, there are about 294 historical monuments, art, architecture, and natural reserves. Among the tourist destinations of the district can be mentioned: Soroca Citadel, Lumânarea Recunoținței, Colina Casca Geological, and Paleontological Nature monument, "Adormira Maicii Domnului" monastery in the village of Cosăuți, Struve geodesic arch in the village of Rudi, Rudi monastery, Peșteri Izvoare with mineral waters.
