Zadar (Croatia)
Zadar is the beating heart of northern Dalmatia. It lies partly on the mainland and partly on a small peninsula. The coast is surrounded by many smaller and larger islands such as Pašman, Dugi Otok, Ugljan and others. Within a pleasant driving distance are the Paklenica and Kornati National Protected Parks.
It is the administrative centre of Zadar County, a university town and an important transport hub: there is a boat harbour and ferry port Gaženica, a yacht marina, railway and bus stations, Zemunik airport. The town is situated on the Adriatic highway, 20 km from the motorway.
Zadar attracts tourists not only for its excellent swimming and wide range of services, but also for its many historical monuments. Worth mentioning are the Church of St. Donatus, the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, the ancient forum, and many other mostly Romanesque and Renaissance buildings. The historic centre is dominated by the famous Kalelarga Street, and the social life is especially lively in the Foša wharf or the Arsenal Fortress. There are also numerous museums. Among other things, the famous maraschino liqueur is produced here.
Although Zadar was badly damaged by the 1991-1992 Krajina Serb aggression, all the damage has long since been repaired, and in 2016 Zadar was even awarded the prestigious title of European Best Destination.
Zadar boasts two modern, technically unique attractions. On the coast in the westernmost part of the city you will find the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun. The Sea Organ emits specific sounds and the Greeting to the Sun creates a set of visual effects.
