Žatec (Czech Republic)
The royal town of Žatec is one of the oldest towns in Central Europe. The history of the town has been firmly intertwined with the cultivation and processing of hops for more than 800 years. Its motto is History-beer-hops-atmosphere.
The tradition of hop-growing and brewing has given rise to a large number of buildings where hops were stored and processed. This zone of technical monuments is a candidate for inscription on the World Heritage List.
Žatecko is the LARGEST hop-growing area in the country. Here you will find the largest air-conditioned hop warehouse in the world. The Hop Museum is also the LARGEST in the world with its 4,000 m² and the Žatec Dočesná, the family silver of the Ústí nad Labem region, is the festival with the LONGEST tradition in the EU.
The historic centre of the town offers many important buildings and a variety of styles from the Romanesque to the Art Nouveau period. In the vicinity of the medieval walls you will see the Church of the Assumption, the Jewish synagogue, the town fortifications with the Hussite bastion, the Museum of the Homolupuli, the Kněžská and Libočanská Gate and the Regional Museum K. A. Polánek.
Visitors can also climb the 140 steps to the town hall tower, from where they can see several curiosities of which Žatec is justly proud. The first are the chimneys of hop-growing buildings, which in the 19th century gave Žatec the nickname of the town with a hundred chimneys. A legend says that whoever sees Hazmburk Castle in the Bohemian Central Highlands from the gallery of the town hall tower will have a secret unspoken wish come true.
An interesting feature is the grave of the oldest brewer in the world, which is highlighted by a memorial plaque near the plague column. Another recommended stop for beer lovers is the Temple of Hops and Beer and the neighbouring Hop Museum.
